Chapter Thirteen

Davey could not have known that the spot he picked had been cleared in early spring of all brush. Rains had eroded the earth, and the incline dropped sharply. The force of his thrust to roll them free of the flames was more than enough to tear Meredith from his arms, and they tumbled with increasing speed down the rock-strewn slope.

Meredith cried out several times, tearing the cloak away from her eyes. It was Davey’s name she called. She could not see him in the drifting smoke. Frightened, she gulped air, then again cried out for Davey.

He heard her calling from somewhere above him, but he had not the strength to answer her. He had come to a stop against a jagged boulder and, coughing and gasping, was stunned by pain. It slowly came to him that he could breathe, and while the air was still smoky, a wind drove most of it away.

He wanted to close his eyes and rest, but the danger had not passed. He and Meredith were out in the open and their enemy had to be near. Davey tried wetting his lips and found no moisture. With a groan he could not stifle, he used the boulder for support to help him stand. Seeing Meredith staggering toward him, he struggled to call out to her.

He shook his head as if that would clear his vision. “Are you hurt?” he asked when long moments went by and he heard no sound from her. In the dark it was nearly impossible to see her face, though it was mere inches from his own. “Lass, answer,” he rasped, listening beyond his own rough breath for the sound of hers.

“Hold me.”

Davey reached for her, pain spearing every inch of his body. He managed to draw her close, and for long minutes they stood entwined, while above them flames still lit the night.

“We are not safe here,” Meredith whispered, taking hold of his hand. She needed rest and water before she could use her healing powers on Davey. He was still dazed, for he did not know the extent of his injuries. There were many cuts, and his skin was reddened and blistered from the fire. Her own throat felt as parched as his. He had been strong for her when she needed it most, and now she would be strong for him.

“Horses,” he muttered, pushing himself away from the boulder he had used to support himself. He knew he should draw his sword. He could not believe that Owain did not wait close by to attack them. “Do you sense him near?”

She did not look at him as she shook her head. She still had to work out for herself what had happened within the chamber. Her mind felt as if a thick blanket had smothered her senses. There was no reason to worry Davey, but her fear was bone deep and quite chilling when she thought of how much power Owain had gained. Power he was unafraid to use against her.
